The Football Association of Rwanda ‘FERWAFA’ has signed a cooperation agreement with the Eco Art Center in organizing the games on environmental conservation.

It is a competition that will be attended by young players, between 14 and 23 years old

The agreement was signed on Thursday 25th, May 2023 in the city of Kigali. This agreement is aimed at collaborating between Eco Art Initiative and FERWAFA in organizing the World Cup Games, but also aims at preserving the environment, which is also the main goal of Eco Art Initiative.

Secoto literally means “Sustainable Environmental Conservation Tournaments”. This tournament will be attended by all 32 teams from Rwanda, where 30 teams will be at the district level, and two other teams will represent national park.

Eco Art leader Shumbusho Patience organizes of these games and says they have decided to use football in a way that protects the environment by spreading enough information.

He said, “How to take care of the environment, but through sports we said ‘why not use the voice of sports to protect the environment’, that’s why we came up with the SECOTO project that will work in 201 countries that are already members of the United Nations (UN).”

Jules Karangwa was the representative of FERWAFA when he observed the agreement

FERWAFA Secretary General, Jules Karangwa said that this event organized by ECO Arts is excellent and that is why they heard from them soon. He said, “If you look at some of the problems facing the world, it is climate change, so if you look at the ones who can solve this problem, it is the people who cause it.

In 2016, FIFA partnered with the United Nations (UN) to continue environmental campaigns through football. It is in this way that FERWAFA is collaborating with ECO Arts, we will continue to give them all technical assistance.”

Kigali Pele Stadium, Ubworahane Stadium, Huye District International Stadium, and Umuganda Stadium will host these games where each stadium will host 8 teams, and the competition will last for two weeks.

Prizes will be awarded to the first place team, as well as to the best environmental campaign team, but every participating team will be awarded. The first team will receive 50 million Frw, and each participating team will receive 10 million.

But that’s not all, as the winning team will travel to Dubai for the opening ceremony of the World Cup later this year.
